First-Timer and VIP Reception
If you’re a new attendee, this special meet-and-greet opportunity is for you.

NIA would like to welcome all first-time attendees to the 2007 convention. This invitation-only event is an opportunity to introduce first-timers and new members to NIA’s leadership. We’ll also provide an overview of what you can expect to take home from this year’s gathering. The NIA Board of Directors, executive committee, past presidents, committee chairmen, and staff will be present to welcome everyone and answer any questions you may have about the annual convention, committees, or programs that NIA offers. This hosted cocktail reception is casual and immediately precedes the Welcome Reception.

Celebrating the Native American Spirit

Welcome Reception: Celebrating the Native American Spirit
Enjoy a warm NIA welcome to Arizona’s desert playground.

We want to extend you a very special welcome to this year’s NIA Convention at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa. So join us for this magnificent kickoff event complete with dinner, drinks, music, and entertainment that highlights the colorful heritage and captivating spirit of the Native American culture. That culture inspires every detail of these beautiful surroundings, and it will inspire you to make your visit a true adventure by participating in the activities we’ve prepared for you to enjoy throughout the week in Phoenix.

This evening’s reception will bring to life the rich, intriguing culture of the Pima and Maricopa tribes, who have called this land home for generations. You’ll enjoy the relaxing sounds of a Native American flautist, as well as the color and energy of the Yellow Bird dancers, who will perform songs and dances including the Eagle, Rain, and Hoop dances. There could be no better introduction to the culture and heritage of the Native American people. With the evening’s offering of delicious food and lively entertainment, you’ll feel a sense of the American past and absolute pleasure in the present.

The Desert at Dusk: Corona Ranch
As the sun goes down, this exciting ranch comes to life with riding, roping, and more.

Corona Ranch

We’re going to Corona Ranch, and it promises to be a thrilling spectacle. Possibly the most exciting entertainment event of the convention, it will feature the ranch’s amazing rodeo riders, and will let you visit with friends and colleagues while cheering them on.

Entering the ranch is like traveling to another world, perhaps a charming Mexican village with authentic décor and the traditional trappings of a charreada, or Mexican rodeo. You’ll grab a bite to eat and a drink (preferably a margarita), then head to the rodeo ring. There you’ll take in a riding and roping demonstration. In elaborate costumes, the riders will perform impressive riding formations, such as the Paso de la Muerte (Pass of Death).

After taking in the masterful skills demonstrated in the show, you’ll enjoy a buffet of all your Mexican favorites. And to round out the evening, the high-energy live music of the Young Country band will inspire you to put your cowboy boots to good use!

President’s Gala
This elegant convention finale promises to be the event of the year.

Presidents Gala - Ballroom

The President’s Gala traditionally marks the completion of the convention, and this black-tie-optional event is a fitting way to wrap up the week. Attendees will enjoy a fantastic gourmet meal, mingle with friends, and dance the night away one last time before heading home. The evening’s festivities feature an awards ceremony honoring outgoing NIA president, Peter J. Gauchel, for his year of service to our association and industry.

The gala begins with a cocktail reception, which is followed by an elegant dinner. NIA is pleased to welcome back Affinity for this evening’s entertainment. Since the 1980s, Affinity has energized and excited guests with an extensive repertoire of songs from decades past and present. Affinity never fails to pack the dance floor. So enjoy the food and festivities, and celebrate another successful NIA Convention.
